Delhi NCR doesn't allow cars to ply  beyond an age limit, currently 10yrs for Diesel cars and 15yrs for Petrol cars. This is primarily done to reduce the air pollution but it's not clear how?

Every year around 600k cars are sold in Delhi NCR region and car manufacturing process leads to emission of 5.6tons of CO2 per vehicle. This means addition of >30Lac tons of CO2 every year. 

Since March 2020, for almost 2 years the utilisation of cars was reduced massively due to COVID linked lockdowns and even after almost 3 yrs the utilisation of cars is much lesser than pre-covid period.

If the deadline of using private cars is increased by 2 yrs (for diesel and petrol) due to under-utilisation due to COVID, and a stringent pollution check is done to issue this extension, then we can potentially save >30Lac tons of CO2 due to production of 600k extra cars every year.

Nutshell, it is oxymoronic to ban cars and force people to buy new cars if the car health is intact. It should ideally be the condition of car and not the age to decide when it's ready to discard but here we are talking about genuine reason why 2 yrs of extension should be permitted.
