Why this petition matters

Started by Terry Ahern

The history of Agoura started to take shape in the busy 1920 with Fitzgerald's Market and gas station along with a new sign “AGOURA”, it was a must-stop.  This 100yr-old sign went up at the same time the post office did per local historian

For over 100 years, the building regardless of the frontage, and the AGOURA Sign, was part of the most valued scenic experience while traveling through Agoura, as it still is today. Paramount Studio's favored filming the 1 mile stretch on Agoura Road from the AGOURA Sign to Cornell turnoff to Seminole Springs. Movies like the 1946 "The Postman Always Rings Twice" was one of many. In 1945 the market was sold and became Agoura Market and gas. This photo shows two women posing for the camera with the AGOURA sign and Agoura Market and Gas Station, in the background.

In 1955 this plaque commemorated in a ceremony the historical significance of the business and the sign as it hung on the wall for the past 67 years. Last week residents were shocked to hear for the first time they lost the historic building after it was already bulldozed down! No one knew the City issued a permit for demolition as public sentiment was thwarted. It is no wonder the AGOURA Sign wasn't taken down as shaken locally raised City Mayor Deborah Klein Lopez immediately set up a Historic focus group for next week on how to allow the public to protect the Sign and other historical gems of our city.

Please help by supporting any new policy that would make it mandatory to give notice to the public in an effort to save our precious monuments for our future generations. Support by signature and pass on the link on for momentum. SAVE THE AGOURA SIGN
