Please take a few seconds to sign this petition so that we may put pressure on Mayor Christian Provenzano and City Council to hear our voices and make the changes we need to make our community safe and peaceful for everyone. Thank you.

The senseless murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department and the attacks on those calling for justice was the spark that lead to a surge of criminal activity and rioting by people hiding behind protestors. They have been unaccountable as they burn, pillage and loot throughout the United States. The specter of unrest can be found here in Canada as well. This is unacceptable, as crime rates surge throughout the city. Drugs are littering the streets and car break-ins are at an all time high. It is time to hold the city accountable.

The 2020 Final Budget of the City of Sault Ste Marie forecasts $27,539,145 will be spent on funding the Sault Ste Marie Police Services Board in 2020. The police are the biggest recipient of municipal tax dollars in the entire city - and by quite the margin. The runner-up, the Social Services Sault Ste Marie District, which provides shelter, clothes and meals for the most vulnerable in our community, receives approximately $10 million less than the police. This is totally unacceptable. The runner-up should be defunded to completely re-arm the police, hire more officers and increase patrols.

This funding priority represents the idea that security should come before pandering to terrorists and anarchists to create a safe and peaceful community. We believe such communities are made by helping each other, and making sure those who want to hurt us are stopped.

As such, we believe a transfer of 50% of this forecasted expenditure on the social services administration is transferred to the police department is justified and should be effected immediately by City Council. This effort should be the first of many subsequent actions that protect those in our community from an underfunded and villianized police service.

We will not accept just a decrease in funding of social services. It is time that all cities everywhere begin defunding their social services in an effort to protect targeted communities from violent and criminal activities and to make our communities safe and peaceful for everyone. Improving our mental health wards and prison capacity to help those in need must take priority before they hurt others. The time for this is long overdue.
