Saskatoon Health Region: Remove ban on midwife support for home birth after caesarean (HBAC)

Supporters

Women deserve the right to choose homebirth after cesarean. It is their own decision to make and they should be able to make it at a personal level, without undue pressures from non-evidence based public policies, and after weighing the risks and benefits according to their own circumstances. A public policy banning midwife support for HBAC puts a limit on women's right to choose the circumstances in which they give birth, thus violating their basic human rights.

Recently, the Saskatoon Health Region in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan made a decision to ban midwife support for HBACs.  This policy is not evidence-based but, as explicitly stated by the Health Region, is based solely on risk management considerations (in other words, attempts to minimize legal risks to medical staff).

The real reason behind this ban isn't patient safety, as claimed by the Saskatoon Health Region.  The real reason for this ban is the legal safety of hospital administrators and medical staff: by instituting this ban, they are succumbing to medico-legal pressures, while setting up a policy that violates women's rights.

If you support a woman's right to choose the circumstances in which she gives birth, please sign this petition.

If you live in Saskatoon, please consider attending the Maternal health consumer meeting regarding the discontinuance of HBAC in Saskatchewan to be held on Thursday, June 13, at Birth Rhythms, a local birthing and education group.
