Time to kick the Investigation into Northern Village of Pinehouse back into gear!

D'Arcy Hande started this petition to Hon. Warren Kaeding (Saskatchewan Minister of Government Relations)

The Village of Pinehouse is a small community in northern Saskatchewan with just over 1000 people, located relatively close to the big Key Lake uranium mine. In 2012, the village council signed a collaboration agreement with two big uranium companies, Cameco and Areva.  Millions of dollars of grants and contracts started pouring in after Village Council agreed to mining expansion in their region. But most Pinehouse residents have not benefited. Instead Mayor Mike Natomagan has at times received a salary in excess of $90,000, and the Deputy Mayor has been paid more than $60,000.

Freedom of Information requests have often been obstructed and the level of accountability by the village administration is abysmal. Sixteen FOI requests over seven years have failed to meet legislative compliance. This was met with a giant shrug on the part of the Mayor. Finally, in Dec 2018, Saskatchewan's Minister of Government Relations ordered an investigation by respected lawyer Neil Robertson.  But now Mr. Robertson has accepted an appointment as judge of Court of Queen's Bench, and we are afraid his successor's appointment will be delayed.

The people of Pinehouse need the government investigation to continue immediately.  We ask the Minister of Government Relations to act urgently: quickly appoint a new Pinehouse inspector, and allow local residents to elect new, more accountable village leadership as soon as possible.
