We believe the citizens of Sarasota County should have the right to backyard chicken keeping.
We believe that chicken keeping is a healthy, economic, and sustainable way to feed and enrich our families and our communities.
We respectfully request our leaders to act now to change County ordinances to allow chickens (no roosters) and other fowl in the backyards of residential homes, with certain restrictions as deemed necessary by the County Commissioners.
Alternatively, please consider reclassifying chickens and other fowl as "domestic animals" or pets, as some areas have done. (For example, Bellevue, WA, classifies up to 6 fowl as "household pets" to be regulated under current pet and nuisance laws as needed.)
