Hi, we are Grade 5/6 students from Duke of Connaught Public School in Ms.Papoff's class.
We are here because we want to stop Party City and other costume stores from selling racist costumes. Imagine if someone offends your culture and religion by using those costumes which they are selling in the stores? Then, how would you feel about it? Well, that's what Party City and other costume stores are doing which causes offence and hurt to others. For example, they are selling indigenous costumes for Halloween. That's not right! One reason it's not right is because it's not accurate. If you were Indigenous and you saw someone wearing a costume that stereotypes indigenous clothing, how would you feel? Also, did you know every feather and bead are important and must be earned? It's not something we can just buy and wear! These costumes are appropriation because they steal parts of cultures in order to make money. Finally, the names of the costumes are highly inappropriate. For example, names like "sexy Indian girl" and "Pocahottie" are not only offensive to indigenous peoples but also towards people who identify as women and girls. Sadly, 1/3 of Indigenous women are assaulted which is twice the rate of sexual assault at national average! We should take a stand against Party City and other stores for selling racist, sexist, and offensive costumes. THIS IS A CULTURE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT , NOT A COSTUME!

Please sign this petition if you want to stop Party City and other costume stores from selling racist and offensive costumes. Thank You!
