I am asking the community of Bellville for their support in urging the village to pass an ordinance that will allow beehives within the town. As it is widely known, the bee population is facing a decline due to modern human activity. In an effort to support honey bees in our local area, it would be in our best interest to place a local ordinance that will allow residents to keep one or two beehives on their own private properties if they so wish.

Earlier this year, the village made a decision against my beehive, claiming that it was not "expressly allowed" within the code of ordinances, but they promised to put an ordinance into place within the near future (approximately before the following calendar year). However, as of October of 2018, there had not been much progress towards keeping that promise.

I am personally involved in this issue, as it was my beehive the Village asked me to remove by the end of July 2018. I had placed the beehive in our backyard in April with hopes of becoming a new hobbyist beekeeper. I care about the future of our planet and the world we will leave behind for our three young children, who I currently stay at home with while my husband works as a corrections officer in Mansfield. Beekeeping is simply a personal hobby that I am passionate about.

Before I installed the beehive in our backyard, I had checked the code of ordinances and found nothing prohibiting them; I also knew of another local resident who has a beehive or two in town on his private property.  However, the village asked me to remove the beehive until they could put an ordinance into place because one of our neighbors raised some personal safety concerns (e.g., allergies). I have since done more research and provided examples of other local ordinances that address similar circumstances and ways to prevent major conflicts. These safety measures include strict requirements regarding property lines and beehive placements, as well as proof from a medical professional regarding any allergies adjacent property owners/residents may have.

While it was a huge disappointment to have to remove my beehive, I completely understand the reasoning behind their decision and I complied by the village's wishes. All that I ask is that they stand by their verbal promises in placing an ordinance that would allow beehives on private properties in town.
