Alter Sarah Lawrence's Preferred Name Policy

We the students and faculty of Sarah Lawrence College have been working for years to reform the college's preferred name policy. Our current system relies almost solely on legal names, and the third-party software the college uses has made little effort to accommodate the needs of transgender students. Over the years small improvements have been made, and the IT department has begun work on a fix which could completely rectify the issue. Unfortunately, they are understaffed and underfunded, and so this could take some time. We are writing this to encourage SLC to consider making this solution a top priority, and to allocate funds toward temporary staff, so that this can be resolved more quickly.
Every day under this current system, students are forced to use their legal names for class rosters, dorm assignments and - most devastatingly in the everyday - the website used for submitting the majority of class assignments. In order to receive assignment credit, they must not only make posts under names which are painful to them but also in workshops tell their classmates those names so that people know which work to review.
We believe that if we all unite under the common goal of a safer campus for transgender students we can bring the preferred name issue to a conclusion by the end of the calendar year. Please, consider joining us, so that Sarah Lawrence College can become a front runner in progressive policies for transgender students.
