Save Bret Harte's Special Education Pre-K Program

Save the special education preschool classroom at Bret Harte School! My daughter Rose, 3, has gone to this wonderful school for the past year. She has made remarkable progress through the efforts of an amazing and dedicated young teacher named Juliette Friel in the special education preschool program. Serving 3-5 year olds with special needs, the program provides services for students after they age out of Early Intervention but before they are old enough for elementary school. The class at Harte is a effective, loving learning environment for my daughter and her classmates, for whom stability and consistency are crucial. In addition, the special education preschool class is an important part of the school. It is often integrated with other classes for recess, field trips, special events, and sometimes just stories and centers. Students in the general education pre-k and Kindergarten classes have made friends and formed bonds with their peers in the special education preschool class, and all of the students have benefitted from these relationships.  Current and former parents speak glowingly of the program and how much Ms. Friel positively impacted their children and made their first experience with school safe, happy, and productive. This is an example of CPS working for students and families. Despite these successes, Chicago Public Schools notified the school last week that they were terminating the program. Closing this program would be a real injustice to south side families of students with special needs.  Please sign the petition to show the community supports keeping this excellent early childhood special education program at Harte.
