Why this petition matters

  • We call upon the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), led by Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor, to immediately stop exploiting unemployed teachers who are seeking for employment overseas. We are demanding both SAQA and Dirco to immediately allow walk-ins to their offices like most of the government offices. These two government institutions are exploiting us because they are demanding that we use courier services for submission of our documents. Aboveall, they charge us extra exorbitant fee if you want you documents to be processed within a short space of time. They internationally delay processing our documents so that we are forced to pay extra money. For instance, it takes 20 days or more to get a quotation from Saqa and once you get it you pay R610 which is going to take another 4 to 5 weeks (if one is luck) to get a verification letter. However, if you pay R2200 or so it takes 5 days. And your letter is sent to Brooklyn PostNet which is another extra expense to have it couriered from there. Dirco takes 6 to 8 weeks to have our documents apostilled or authenticated which is ridiculous and unfair. We demand that both SAQA and Dirco to reduce their turn around times to be at least 14 working days. This process is done only for teachers who wants to go and teach in Asian countries. Many of the teachers who are seeking for employment in Asia have been adversely affected by Dirco and Saqa poor services  The entire process at the moment takes almost six months to be finalized. Hence,  many job seekers have had their offer of employment cancelled due to the delays of submitting their required documents working Visas. Finally we are appealing to the President to intervene as a matter of urgency.
