Reinstate 'Chain Reaction' Peace Sculpture as Public Art

The unique and timely 'Chain Reaction' 26-foot tall nuclear mushroom cloud warning monument and peace sculpture was designed and created in 1991 by 3-time Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Paul Conrad and gifted to the City of Santa Monica public art collection. Its construction was initially funded by peace philanthropist Joan Kroc. 'Chain Reaction' was removed from the City's public art collection in 2012 when it was thought it might be structurally unsafe and too costly to refurbish. The community came forward to raise funds and the City added funds and their support. 'Chain Reaction' has now been renovated and is still standing in the Santa Monica Civic Center emanating its timely and important message. And a 'peace garden' with solar uplighting was created to encircle it. It was unanimously voted a City Landmark in 2012 by the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission. We honorably request 'Chain Reaction' now be reinstated back into the City of Santa Monica's public art collection.
