Pave Paradise Put Up a Parking Lot

This petition had 94 supporters

The Facilities Master Plan for Santa Cruz City Schools (SCCS) is being implemented without adequate input from all stakeholders.  Neighbors of DeLaveaga School have been told that a line item in last year's newspaper was adequate notice of building plans for the district.  Most neighbors surveyed have NO knowledge of these plans and agree that notice and input has been inadequate. By signing this petition, you ask that construction plans be put on hold, to allow their input on plans for the school that include preserving as much of this greenspace as possible.

At DeLaveaga Elementary School in the Prospect Heights neighborhood, SCCS is moving forward to pave over neighborhood greenspace on the front lawn and to build a two story classroom building facing Prospect Heights, which would block neighbors existing lines of sight.  Some families, like ours, have watched generations of children learn to ride bikes on this lawn and enjoy seeing our neighbors and our wildlife use it.

While some may say a parking lot is a higher priority, one must consider the cost.  Once it's gone, its gone.  The grass produces oxygen, sound absorption, water recycling (it is rarely watered...watered via our fog) and will not produce smog emissions directly next to the kindergarten play and classroom area, as a parking and drop off area would.  Finally, the district is spending our tax money to expand campuses when their own demographic firm predicts declining enrollment.  As per that same study, there are currently only 34 more students district wide than in the recent past when two elementary schools were closed.  More parking will encourage more kids being driven to school, and increase, not decrease traffic.  Finally, paving this greenspace will blast noxious fumes directly into the kindergarten play and classroom areas.
