On Saturday, May 1st, 2021 at approximately 6:00pm a high-speed car chase on Harshaw Rd. in Patagonia, AZ, resulted in a frightening and unnecessary car accident.  A Border Patrol vehicle recklessly pursued a van filled with 8 people into a residential neighborhood.  As the van spun out of control, it nearly hit several pedestrians who were walking by, landed just yards from the entrance to a home where a teenager was resting, and sprung a significant oil leak.  It was miraculous- truly- that there weren’t worse injuries, property damage, and deaths from this incident.  Many people were out walking, and had the crash happened slightly before or after it did, they could have very likely been hit; had the car careened differently off the concrete wall, it easily could have crashed into the house it eventually halted in front of or down the hill to where an educator’s retreat was taking place outdoors. Had the chase continued just another block, it would have passed, or crashed into, the heavily-trafficked Post Office and downtown shops.  And, of equal importance, the 8 people in the van could easily have been killed or seriously injured due to the complete lack of judgment exhibited by the agents who were chasing them.

This high-speed chase was reckless, unsafe, and unnecessary. Given the presence of Border Patrol throughout the county, the agents should have called for back up from their colleagues stationed throughout the region, rather than put so many people’s lives at risk.

We, the residents of Patagonia, AZ, and of Santa Cruz county more broadly, are deeply disturbed by the negligence exhibited and that put many people at risk.  We, the undersigned, demand that 1) action be taken to ensure that the Border Patrol agents responsible for this accident are properly reprimanded; 2) a policy be created that no high-speed car chases take place in residential areas, and that any Border Patrol officers who violate the policy going forward will face clearly outlined disciplinary action; 3) an apology be extended to the Patagonia community and the passengers in the van for having recklessly put so many of people in danger.
