The proposed expansion for SR-85 (Highway 85) in the West Valley, converting the HOV lane to a toll lane and adding an additional toll lane in each direction, will not solve the growing commute problems on this heavily traveled corridor.

VTA acknowledges that the $170 million dollar project will leave SR-85 (projected completion 2020) fully congested again by 2023, only eight years from now. The proposed expansion with additional lanes will only make the existing choke points worse:

•    at 85/17

•    at 85/Winchester

•    at 85/280/Foothill (Stevens Creek Blvd)

•    and all congestion north of 280.

The proposed expansion will not fix any of the choke points. It will create more congestion all along SR-85. It will also worsen the existing noise  and air quality issues experienced by residents along the corridor.
