Free Cain Velasquez
Velasquez was booked into the Santa Clara County main jail on Monday for attempted murder after he allegedly shot at a man who was recently accused of molesting a relative possibly “100 times,” according to reports. The relative is believed to be a minor. Velasquez injured the alleged abuser’s stepfather in the shooting.
When details of the possible motive emerged, the MMA community, in large part, began to rally behind Velasquez, who’s being held without bail. “Free Cain” became a hashtag and general theme across social media platforms before Velasquez is due in court Wednesday. Many people believe that if the motive behind Velasquez’s alleged actions is true, then his alleged actions were justified.
Goularte was arraigned Friday on one felony count of "a lewd and lascivious act with a child under the age of 14." He was released despite objections from the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office.
The alleged shooting incident occurred three days later. The Mercury-News report mirrors tweets and comments put forth by Twitter user Fight Oracle and others, which stated Velasquez opened up fire on a car carrying Goularte but struck another individual. The individual hit was reportedly Goularte's stepfather, who is expected to survive. The identity of the third individual is not known.
Velasquez, 39, is currently being held in Santa Clara County Main Jail without bail for attempted murder, with an arraignment scheduled for Wednesday at noon local time, per online records. There have been no announced charges at this time. At the time of publication, Velasquez's representation has not responded to an MMA Junkie inquiry for comment on the arrest.
