Virginia Lyons started this petition to Santa Barbara County

At a time of escalating economic disparity in California, certain cities and counties have adjusted by creating higher minimum wage requirements than that mandated by the State of California. According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, a parent of one child would need to make at least $31.94/hr in Santa Barbara to sustain themselves.

Industries are booming with the incoming wave of tech to the area from large businesses like SONOS, Appfolio, and even Amazon. This should benefit everyone. But, in an affluent community like that of Santa Barbara, where the median cost of a home is nearly 1.2 million dollars, the middle and lower class become overlooked and stiffled by the high cost of living.

California's minimum wage is steadily raising year by year and currently at $12/hr. That is still $4.50 per hour less than the calculated living wage for an adult with 0 children. Young adults already struggle with housing. Yet, the reality is that most workers on minimum wage are supporting families, making $12/hr a very stark contrast from what they actually need to survive.

Cities like Santa Monica and Berkeley have minimum wage ordinances that acknowledge their higher cost of living. It is time for Santa Barbara County to follow suit and make the official minimum wage $15/hr.
