Bay Area Young Democrats started this petition to Mayor Sandy Stimpson and

Currently in Mobile there is absolutely no transparency when it comes to policing. This is critical for engendering trust in the community and allowing for appropriate oversight. How can we as citizens of this city ensure that our police are performing to the highest standards if we do not know the policies which guide them or how violations were responded to?

As we have seen in numerous instances in Mobile and the nation has a whole it is not enough to hope that police do not perpetuate systems of white supremacy and police brutality. We must be actively engaged in oversight!

For Transparency and Accountability we demand the immediate public release of the following:

  1. Mobile Police Department Policy Manual and Procedures
  2. Violations and subsequent disciplinary actions taken in the last 5 years

It is particularly important for clear communication on the policies regarding training, hiring, disciplining/complaint handling and use-of-force.  It is essential that these policies should be easily accessible on the MPD website. The Police Manual should be published as searchable document in its entirety with a clear table of contents, revision dates, and explanations of key passages in plain non-technical language. Please refer to the Policing Project Manuals Initiative for further guidance.

Many other cities release their operation manuals, including Salt Lake City, Denver and, New Orleans. Birmingham  provides an example for clear communication of some key policies as well as disciplinary actions.
