RE: Please Save Leighton Arms Pub at 101 Brecknock Road

Our North London community is strongly protesting against the unauthorised opening of a supermarket in what was our local pub.

On 25 November 2015, Camden Council identified the Leighton publichouse on the corner of Torriano Avenue and Brecknock Road, as a‘community leisure and cultural facility’ for the neighbourhood.

They gave permission to developers to build five new residential units within the property, on condition that the Pub remained on the groundfloor.  (Appeal Ref: APP/X5210/W/15/3095242).

Over the past two years, developers went ahead with major reconstruction work on the site. In addition to building flats above the pub, two houses were built on the site of the pub garden - with oversized balconies overlooking the neighbours. (The subject of another planning breach.)

Then recently, all pub signs were removed and replaced by large signs for ‘Nisalocal’ supermarket.  In spite of protests by local residents, with the full support of the Mayor of Camden and many councillors, the supermarket quietly opened for business on 30 June 2018.

Camden Council has issued an Enforcement Notice which gives the developers until 27 July to appeal or reinstate the pub within three months.

“The developer promised to modernise the pub, not destroy it,” one resident said. “We already have several well-established grocery shops including Nisa local within a minute’s walk of the Leighton Arms.”  Another grocery store is the last thing we need - and it is not what Camden Council gave permission for.”

We urge our MP and Camden Council to act and enforce planning laws to save our community cultural centre and public house.
