As part of a growing sanctuary movement across the country following the election of president Trump, concerned students, staff, and faculty at the University of Denver have demanded that the university administration take substantive steps toward making DU a sanctuary campus.
While we understand the controversial nature of using the term "sanctuary", we believe that our shared commitments and efforts to vigorously protect the privacy and civil rights of all of our undocumented, international, marginalized, and persecuted community members are intended to establish and affirm our University campus as a safe and inclusive space in these uncertain times.
DEMANDS (to name a few)
-DU should not voluntarily participate with or allow immigration enforcement officials on our campus without a warrant, subpoena or court order.
-DU should notify the DU community in the event that immigration enforcement officials request or attempt to enter our campus.
-DU should not cooperate with any federal effort to create a registry of individuals based on any protected characteristics such as religion, national origin, race, or sexual orientation.
-DU and the Office of the Chancellor should reconfirm its committment to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.
-DU should continue to admit students consistent with its nondiscrimination policies, particularly as they relate to undocumented students
-DU should develop a sancturary campus task force.
-DU should provide financial and institutional support for the establishment of the Office of Immigrant Community Protection and Support (ICPS)
-DU should create an emergency fund to support students, faculty, and staff affected by current and future immigration executive orders.
