Period poverty is an extreme issue in society and our schools. 8 million girls around the world miss class every single month due to their periods.  Having access to free and convenient menstrual sanitation is a necessity.

Periods are expensive. A survey of about 2,000 women ages from 18-55, established that 49 percent have had lack of access to sanitary products. We can estimate that women on average will spend $6,360 from ages 12-55. For low income families this can be more than they can afford. So, girls use things like newspaper, old socks, toilet paper, make up pads, torn up diapers, old rags, and plastic bags to collect period blood. This is horrific and needs to change. By putting menstrual hygiene products in restrooms we can help combate period poverty in our schools.

Young girls are missing school for the simple fact that they don't have access to sanitary products. Young girls are getting behind in school because of the school they have missed because they can't afford period products. A spokesperson for the Department of Education said "Students must feel comfortable in their classes so they can focus on learning". Having free and convenient access to menstrual hygiene products will allow girls to feel more comfortable in their classes. Every time a girl has to walk down to the nurse for a tampon or a pad, misses out on valuable instructional time. Girls often do miss class and don't participate as actively in class for fear of leakage or embarrassment.

Periods come unexpectedly. 79% of women under 18 still experience irregular monthly cycles. This adds to the constant stress of school. If we put menstrual hygiene products conveniently in bathrooms, rather than hidden away in the nurses office, it can take away some of that stress.

Having schools provide menstrual hygiene products in restrooms is as essential as providing school lunches. These aren't luxury items. There is nothing luxurious about having a period and there is nothing luxurious as not being able to afford a lunch. By signing this petition you will be helping solve the period poverty that women and girls face everyday.
