Paint Downtown San Rafael Bicycle Lanes

Paint designated north-south and east-west green bicycle lanes through downtown San Rafael!
My daughter started at San Rafael High School in August. She wanted to ride her bike for exercise, independence, the environment, and to reduce traffic. Recently, while riding home on a downtown sidewalk, she was struck by a car pulling out of a driveway. Thankfully, she’s ok and wants to keep riding. I just don’t know where.
There are no bike lanes through busy downtown San Rafael. Previously, I had suggested she take sidewalks when possible. But driveways are dangerous and the sidewalk is tight. The roads are full of cars.
Meanwhile, every Davidson Middle or San Rafael High student must travel through downtown at some point in their school career. That is over 350,000 student trips through downtown yearly. With all the efforts San Rafael has made to reduce traffic and improve alternative transportation, the only safe option for the school and work commute through downtown should not be getting into a car.
San Rafael needs to paint designated north-south and east-west green bicycle lanes through downtown (see image, for example). The relatively small cost of painting lanes is worth getting more people on their bikes and cars off the roads.
We are so fortunate that our daughter is ok. Let’s not wait for a child or commuter to be killed before we take initiative to make our downtown streets safe.
