Improve lighting around the surrounding neighborhoods of Cal Poly's campus

The residential neighborhoods surrounding Cal Poly's campus currently lack sufficient lighting needed to keep students and San Luis Obispo citizens safe. This lighting shortage poses problems for students and community members in a multitude of ways, especially when it comes to having to walk these dark streets late at night. While this has remained a common concern of students at Cal Poly for quite some time, suitable changes have never been implemented. In the long run, the costs associated with improved lighting are insignificant compared to the current risks. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 out of 5 female students and 1 out of 16 male students are sexually assaulted while in college. Taking these statistics into account, better lighting can help students feel safe, and influence how perpetrators maneuver through the areas. Proper lighting acts as a deterrent for criminality, which is why it is so vital that we improve our lighting situation in order to reduce the opportunity for crime and help students and residents of this community feel like their safety and well-being matter.
