Accountability Now SLO started this petition to San Luis Obispo City Council and

We are Accountability Now SLO, a group of students who are passionate about providing political transparency to San Luis Obispo residents and preserving accountability of our elected officials through incremental change on both a grassroots and nationwide level.

We want to make SLO’s current At-Large Plurality electoral system more accountable and representative of its constituency by replacing the current first past the post (FPTP) electoral method with a ranked-choice voting method. A switch to ranked-choice voting would reduce political corruption and increase representation.

There are many benefits that come with ranked-choice voting that are simply not present within our first-past-the-post system:

  1. First, in elections using ranked choice voting, voters can support their top choice without fear of inadvertently helping to elect an unfavorable party's candidate. As such, it is easier to elect officials who are not beholden to an establishment party’s special interests.
  2. Second, ranked-choice voting forces candidates to pay closer attention to their constituencies' issue preferences in order to compete amongst more competition present within the runoff system
  3. Third, one of the greatest contributions ranked-choice voting has to offer to our electoral process is the reduction of elite-level polarization and the minimization of politically extreme candidates within the legislature.

All of these outcomes demonstrate how effective a switch to ranked-choice voting would be in fighting political corruption.

Ranked-choice voting could increase representation in San Luis Obispo. Registered voters in San Luis Obispo have a diverse mix of party preferences. There is a significant proportion (nearly 30% of voters) of registered voters who belong to third parties or have no party preference. Over a third of our voting population in SLO is not represented by our two-party system and are forced to either vote for one of the two parties or risk their vote not making an impact on the election results. With a ranked-choice voting system, moderate and/or independent candidates and their supporters stand a greater chance of election and having their voices heard in the democratic process.
