Dear fellow classmates, friends, school staff, and parents

My name is Joel Ledesama, and I am a senior at San Leandro High School, and also a teacher assistant of a 5th grade classroom. I am taking the time to write you all on behalf the 5th grade classroom, and myself. We all suffered discrimination and rudeness from the substitute teacher, Mr. Ramos on March 1, 2019.

When I walked in to the classroom around 1:20pm he treated me very rude and disrespectful. I noticed that almost the whole class was upset, students were crying, which I found very unusual because those students are always extremely happy. I tried talking with one of the students outside the classroom, to see why she was crying but the substitute didn’t allow this. I had keep asking repeatedly until he finally allowed me to talk with a couple students. The students told me that Mr. Ramos was making some of the students do push-ups, and called some of the students names, such as “little mouse” and other things not so pleasant. I asked him to be patient with the students, and he told me that he was in charge of the classroom and he told me that I didn’t have the right or the voice to tell give him any suggestions.

As the day went on, the students begged me to help them with Mr. Ramos, but when I was going to go and tell another teacher what was happening, Mr. Ramos told me that I was crazy and he didn’t allow me to go. He told me to go to the corner of the classroom. In that moment, I turned around and went to get help. Near the end of class, Mr. Ramos spoke with the Principal, the students went with another adult. After that I went to the office and I saw Mr. Ramos, he told me what I did was wrong. He said I was the one who created the whole problem when I voiced my concerns about how rude and disrespectful he was to the students. I truly believe they were afraid of him and also, they were afraid to speak up.

I’m not sure if this is a once occurrence, or if this is how he treats all of the classrooms he subs in. He uses scare tactics, so people do not speak up against him. As an 18 year old, I was frightened because of the way he was treating us due to his comments, and his actions, I can’t imagine how the 5th graders felt. I am glad I was there to help the 5th graders, but it’s important to note that not every classroom has an assistant that can speak up in difficult situations. If the students themselves don’t feel comfortable speaking up, who will? Later that evening, some of the students posted on social media that they were still scared. I am also still scared. 24 hours later and I still feel this way, can you imagine how those kids are feeling right know? If you have a brother, sister, nephew, cousin etc. would you like them to go through any of this and still be scared even though they are in the safety of their own home? Is this type of substitute teacher acceptable for the youth? A substitute who makes students upset, and even made some student cry?

If you value the education of our youth, and expect a certain level of respect, value, and kindness, then please sign this petition.

Sincerely, Joel Ledesma
