SJSU EE Student Coalition started this petition to San Jose State Electrical Engineering Students

EE 140 at San Jose State University has a reputation as being the hardest electrical engineering class at the school, amongst the students. With a low pass rate, students have the issue of having to repeat the class for another trial.

Recently, students have been given a remedy to the issues of the class by taking the course outside of SJSU; an SJSU CoE staff member recommended the idea of taking it at another four-year university. This has been a helpful solution, as the course outside of SJSU gives a higher chance at passing.

Unfortunately, the department has found an issue to taking the course outside of the school, and immediately banned students from taking EE 140 outside of SJSU.

ISSUES:

For EE students, there is already a heavy strain put on students, due to the level of difficulty EE classes include. The low pass rate of the strenuous course will only cause students to gain more stress and lose time in their work.

Some students, unfortunately, can't necessarily afford to repeat the course. There have been a number of students who have already taken the online version of EE 140 at other universities. With the department denying any outside credit of the course, these students would have to spend more tuition on a course they already understand and have valid credit, via accredited four-year universities. With tuition continuously increasing, such students risk certain scholarships and risk spending more money to repeat such a difficult class. Silicon Valley and the Bay Area is one of the most expensive places to live in, so placing more of a financial burden on them can also harm student's learning.

In this competitive engineering market, it is very difficult to find jobs right out of graduation. By failing EE 140, students are delayed in receiving their degree, and in turn, threaten themselves from finding a job in the future. Students can't waste time nowadays, as in finding security for their future.

STATISTICS AND INFO:

The fail rate of EE 140 is at ~70%, with the ~30% receiving C's and barely passing the class.

With the option of taking the course elsewhere stripped from students, there has to be some relief, as not even half of students can pass this required course for the BSEE degree.

Please help our students, through this petition, to allow EE140 to be taken outside of SJSU, as it will only be beneficial to our path as electrical engineers.
