Problem
Students are no longer going out to the community as part of HS 104. Community health events were a significant part of the learning experience for the students.

Solution
Department leadership should work to bring back community health events as part of the HS 104 class. We should reconnect with McKinley Elementary, YMCA, and other local community partners.

Personal story
As an SJSU Public Health alumni, I am disheartened that the community events have been taken out of the HS 104 class. HS 104 has had a thirty year history of exploring community health, which is now being taken away. I believe that the community health events exposed students to different aspects of the public health field. In particular, many students were unaware of issues communities may face. For some students, the events were their first experiences in public health outside of the classroom, and this course provided hands on learning experience in the real world. HS 104 students had a direct impact with several different community partners. The experience gained outside of the classroom by hosting these events made SJSU's undergraduate program unique amongst others.
