Stop Renting Out Dolores Park

This petition had 577 supporters

San Francisco residents and visitors value our beautiful, open, and free public parks, they are a jewel of the city and vital public shared space. But now, SF Recreation and Parks Department is literally renting out chunks of Dolores Park for private use. We urge the speedy end of this unfair, and unwise pilot program renting out chunks of Dolores Park to those who can afford to pay -- which truly violates the "public" in public park. These are shared open spaces we all pay for and enjoy. Let's share these spaces, not rent them out as if they were apartments.

Costs range from $33-260 plus a $200 security deposit. This makes this public park exclusive and unaffordable for many who live here and who pay taxes for that park too. We urge Rec/Park to stop this privatization of public space, and stop renting out shared spaces. Programs like this diminish our parks and our culture, and further isolate us and discourage the use of our parks. These spaces, which we all pay to maintain, are for all of us, the public--not for those who can afford to reserve and rent it.

If anything, we need more public shared spaces, not fewer. In this most expensive of cities, we need our public parks to be truly public, for all of us. Programs like this only encourage more privatization and segregation of people, and discourage people from using our parks, fearing they will be rented out for the day.
