San Francisco Mayor London Breed recently nominated Nancy Tung to serve on the San Francisco Police Commission, an important body that sets policy for the Police Department and holds hearings and imposes discipline for officers accused of misconduct. It is now the responsibility of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to approve the appointment and fill an existing vacancy on the Police Commission.

Nancy Tung is extraordinarily qualified to serve on the Police Commission as a 20 year prosecutor, including 11 years in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. Nancy has prosecuted domestic violence cases, protected consumers, and has upheld public integrity by prosecuting public misconduct, fraud, and embezzlement. She has also successfully prosecuted officers for misconduct, removing them from the police and sheriff’s departments. Nancy is an advocate for public safety and will work with police department leadership to fully and quickly implement reforms recommended by the U.S. Department of Justice under President Barack Obama’s leadership.

As a Chinese-American, Nancy Tung will be the only representative of the Chinese community on the 7-person commission, and one of only two people of Asian descent, in a city that is 22% Chinese and 35% Asian. Even before Coronavirus, the Chinese community was feeling an increase in violent crime. Now, with President Trump’s racist and xenophobic remarks about the Chinese community during the COVID-19 pandemic, and new disturbing incidents of violent crime fueled by xenophobia and hate, the Chinese community needs and deserves representation and a strong voice on the Police Commission.

Nancy Tung is a mom, friend, and informed neighbor. She is an advocate for gun reform with Moms Demand Action, and she serves on the board of Stop Crime SF. She is active in local Democratic politics, and in March 2020, Nancy was elected to the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee by Democratic voters of San Francisco in Assembly District 17. She is also a co-founder and serves on the board of the Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club.

Please sign this petition to call on the Board of Supervisors to put politics aside in favor of justice and public safety, and confirm Nancy Tung’s appointment to serve our city on the San Francisco Police Commission.
