Save The Cliff House for future generations!
Why this petition matters
The Cliff House has been there for 157 years - and we want it to continue.
It is unfortunate that the pandemic has affected so many businesses. We encourage the NPS to find a concessionaire to reopen the icon building for all to enjoy a meal and the view. We thank the former managers for keeping The Cliff House going for past 43 years!
However, it was wrong of the previous managers (Dan and Mary Hountalas) to Trademark the name. The Cliff House was in existence for over a 100 before they had the opportunity to become its steward. The name rightfully belongs with the location and in the public sphere.
What happened in Yosemite with the concessionaire taking the names (like The Ahwahnee) was disgraceful. We do not want that bad behavior to be condoned in San Francisco. The Cliff House is bigger than any one manager, family, or concession- it is part of San Francisco’s history and all who visit.
We ask the Dan and Mary Hountalas to give back the name The Cliff House to the public (as managed by the NPS), and thereby restore their own good name. Please relinquish the Trademark. Do the right thing.
