Implement a more Modern & Adaptable Streaming System for the Panda Cam
Since September, 2012, I have been live streaming the San Diego Zoo's Xiao Liwu Panda Cam every single day. As the months have passed, I have seen the panda cub, Xiao Liwu, take his first steps, climb his first trees, and chomp on bamboo. Undoubtedly, my affinity for his adorableness has grown exponentially.
Unfortunately, the San Diego Zoo's technology is outdated and the live streaming uses up so much bandwidth that the network administrator at my job noticed my viewing habits and scolded me. Modern services like ustream, justin.tv, YouTube, and others provide the ability to adaptively change how much bandwidth they use based on quality and bandwidth constraints. The current Panda Cam does not.
Watching Xiao Liwu and the other pandas makes me a happier person. Because of this, I request that the San Diego Zoo investigate and implement a more modern and adaptable streaming system for the Panda Cam, reducing bandwidth consumption and better serving panda fans the world over.
