The Covid-19 pandemic has created tremendous change and challenges in our lives, in our communities, and in our schools. As we continue to recover and reacclimate to a "new normal" at home and on campus following a year of virtual learning, we recently learned San Diego Unified School District leadership is evaluating enrollment given "numbers" aren't where they should be at many sites (Green included). Despite the district's commitment to "protecting schools from staffing declines due to temporary decreases in enrollment triggered by the pandemic" and to "giving students the recovery it deserves", it is predicted several newly hired teachers, students, and class-sizes will be impacted.

Specifically, at Green, we're projected to lose at least one K-2 teacher, which creates a significant disruption in the students day-to-day learning experience and environment (in an already highly disruptive time). Students from this class will then be parsed/integrated into the other remaining classes and the remaining K-2 classes will then have to be reorganized/re-balanced and structured as "combos" (e.g. K-1, and 1-2).

Even one less teacher can harm our students, create unnecessary turmoil in an already tumultuous time, damage newly formed and essential teacher/student/classmate bonds, and is detrimental to learning and to the public education system as a whole. And, lack of a stable, consistent, learning environment and manageable class-size threatens students’ ability to safely and comfortably learn and recover, and reduces our teachers’ ability to efficiently and meaningfully support our kids academically and emotionally as we continue to work our way out of the pandemic, together.

We love our Green community and have been so impressed with the safe and caring reopening of our school.

Please sign our petition and spread the word—we'll make sure it gets in the hands of decision-makers at the district. Feel free to email district leaders directly, too! The more ways we can mobilize to support our beloved teachers, advocate for our children, enable a positive, meaningful, and safe learning environment, the better chances we have of making a difference in the lives of all Green students, families, and staff. Thank you!
