The Issue:
Talking about periods is taboo. Why? Society has stunted the conversation surrounding women’s health while taxing feminine hygiene products as a luxury.
A luxury tax is a tax that is placed on products/services that are deemed to be unnecessary or non-essential. This means they’re not made available in most public restrooms, and when they are it’s for a cost.
Our campaign is to change the feminine hygiene product policy on campus so that it’s offered as complementary in all restrooms on SDSU’s campus. We are combating the tampon tax by making feminine hygiene products free for students, with the hope that it’ll raise awareness of the inconvenience women face every day.
Facts:
San Diego Union Tribune estimates that ending the tampon tax would save women almost $100 a year.
States that are tampon tax-free:
New York, Maryland
Massachusetts
Pennsylvania
Minnesota
New Jersey.
Universities that provide free feminine hygiene products in bathrooms:
Columbia
University of Minnesota
University of Nebraska at Lincoln
University of Wisconsin at Madison
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
Brown University
University of Rochester
Bowdoin University
