Hold The Officers Who Shot Leo Ibarra Accountable - San Diego, CA
Why this petition matters
On June 27th, 2020 two San Diego police officers recognized Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra as a man wanted for robbery earlier that week. The two officers then ran up and chased Leo for a short distance until Leo pulled out a gun concealed in a camouflage wrap. Leo was then gunned down by the two officers being shot 11-times in the back and head, after only seven seconds of the officers arriving on scene. This fatal incident happening after the city of San Diego had passed new police reform policies on June 24th, 2020. Policies that required officers to give warning before firing, to use de-escalation tactics, and to exhaust ALL alternatives before firing. All of which the officers did NOT do, or even attempt.
In a video I explain why I believe these officers violated policy and why they should be held accountable. This being the idea behind the new reform policies in the first place, reduce the use of lethal force and increase accountability. The goal was to protect and preserve life. Well, Leo Ibarra unfortunately has passed away and the officers who shot him are responsible, they need to be held accountable for his death as well as violating these new reform policies.
Leo's death was preventable. Had these officers who shot him followed the new policies required of them who knows, maybe Leo would still be alive. Which yes, he should be. The goal of the officer is not to kill the people they are supposed to be arresting. Unfortunately for Leo, these officers made no effort to do anything but shoot him. How can we justify shooting a person in the back? Especially when it was as many as 11 times. The officers then failed to administer any proper medical aid to Leo after they shot him.
We need to urge city officials like San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Chief of Police David Nisleit, who put these policies into effect in the first place to have these officers held accountable. We need to urge the District Attorney of San Diego Summer Stephan and her office as well. Help spread the effort, sign and share this petition and together we can achieve justice for Leo Ibarra and hold the officers who shot him accountable.
