Install sustainable and off-grid street lighting for the neighborhood of North Park and San Diego at large.

As residents of the North Park neighborhood in San Diego, we have recently experienced some very unpleasant incidents that could have been avoided. The simple solution of adding street lights to increase nighttime visibility in this burgeoning and progressive neighborhood is viable and ready to happen now. However, we are told that the city will be unable to install street lights for decades and at costs exceeding $10 million.
This is both true and untrue. True in that it would take the time and money as this is what is directed by the local utility company. Untrue in that there are alternatives that are proven to provide light at and above industry standards while costing less after installation than conventional methods. With off-grid lights, the taxpayers (ie: the community) does not have to pay for ongoing operational fees every night that the lights are working.
This solution is fiscally sound, environmentally friendly, quickly installed (especially important since it will get darker earlier in the evening as we approach the winter season) and will provide additional nighttime safety for us all.
Please consider this viable solution and proven technology. We as San Diego taxpayers are being shackled by the utility company and its demands upon the city. We ask that you consider what is in the best interests of your constituents and not a multi-billion dollar corporation.
