As a nonsmoker with an austere dissatisfaction towards tobacco, I don’t particularly mind if someone smokes as long as it doesn’t infringe on my rights. When someone walks down the street, however, smoking away and, as a credulous bystander, I get enveloped in the resulting cloud of ash, that’s an encroachment on my personal decision not to partake in smoking. Overall, many smokers deplore the laws that are becoming progressively more strict as to where they can smoke in public; however, it simply arises based on the fact that enough smokers have voluntarily behaved in a way that infringes on other people’s freedom to not smoke.

Not to mention, smoking kills. According to the CDC, “Since 1964, approximately 2,500,000 nonsmokers have died from health problems caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.” Pair this with the increasingly devastating environmental impacts we are seeing from the littering of cigarette butts, and we are witnessing an issue that is begging to be solved.

For those of you who think this will be bad for business: The National Cancer Institute, with the World Health Organization, in 2016 published an extensive review of the economic literature on tobacco control, concluding, “The evidence clearly demonstrates that smoke-free policies do not cause adverse economic outcomes for businesses, including restaurants and bars. In fact, smoke-free policies often have a positive economic impact on businesses.”

To conclude, help me and the citizen of San Clemente make our city even better by arguing for a ban on smoking in high density areas such as downtown and the pier.
