Fireworks are fun for most, but for some, the loud explosions can cause painful memories such as a mass shooting they survived or battles they fought as a service member. People who have witnessed shocking, scary, or dangerous events are prone to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (NIHMH,2019). I am asking the city of San Antonio to post warning signs with the information of when fireworks and/or cannons from Six Flags and Sea World will be heard in the La Cantera Shopping Center.

Symptoms of PTSD include being easily startled and being on high alert at all times. The random explosion from fireworks can cause a person suffering from PTSD to be reminded of their traumatic event. “Although the loud noise of the fireworks can itself be triggering of traumatic memories, typically it is the unpredictability of the explosion that activates the arousal system or sympathetic nervous system,” says Todd K. Favorite, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and director of the U-M Psychological Clinic (Michigan Medicine Dept. if Psychiatry, 2019).

When people with PTSD are aware of the specific days and times fireworks and/or cannons will begin and end, they can better prepare themselves (Michigan Medicine Dept. if Psychiatry, 2019). Even though residents of San Antonio May be aware of the celebrations, the La Cantera Shopping Center advertises being a “tourism oriented” shopping center. This means that many who visit the shopping center may be unaware of the loud noises they will hear in the evenings. Having a sign warning patrons of La Cantera Shopping Center will help to reduce the “random factor” of the explosions and allow for individuals to expect the loud noises. This can make for a more enjoyable experience for those visiting the beautiful open-aired shopping center.
