A note from a member of The Leguminadi:
As a first-year student, I wanted to be a part of the school and participate in events and clubs. After enjoying the 2017 Fall Fest, I was looking forward to the Winter Fest. However, after reviewing the ads I became furious to see that there would be sleigh rides.
I know there may be students who disagree while others may not want to get involved. I simply cannot look the other way. Horses are extremely sensitive to loud sounds and rides around the block create an immense amount of noise. The blinders that the owners put on them do nothing to help with the fact that they fear all the cars around them. They cannot pull as much weight as many people think, especially not in snowy, slushy, or slippery conditions.
I urge you to reconsider having sleigh rides at future Winter Fests. I believe students would much rather care for horses than to take a smelly ride around a busy downtown block.
The change would also be a wonderful opportunity to promote animal sanctuaries within and near Edmonton.
Whether it is cruel or not, this is animal exploitation for human amusement and entertainment, and therefore should be brought to an end.
