Why this petition matters

Started by Matt Mihály

Burning Man is an event that will be enjoyed responsibly by 70,000 people this year. We are the largest Leave No Trace event in the world, and we are excellent stewards of the land on which Burning Man is held.

We understand and respect that the Bureau of Land Management has a legitimate job to do in protecting the land under its charge and the event attendees on it, but we do not believe that providing BLM employees and unnamed "VIPs" amenities that are, in the words of Senator Harry Reid, "outlandish" are appropriate as conditions of the land permit Burning Man needs and receives annually.

24 hour ice cream freezers, Snickers bars and flushable toilets in a desert are not the basis on which the use of public land should be based.

We ask that Sally Jewell, Secretary of the Interior, direct the Bureau of Land Management to remove the unprecedented outlandish requirements that will add an extra $1m-$1.2m in cost to Burning Man, on top of the roughly $4 million they paid last year and expect to pay again this year.
