Reasons Why You Should Support Computer Science In High Schools:
- Provides 21st-century skills necessary for innovation and translates to high-paying, in-demand jobs. Emphasize that computer science is increasingly necessary for community improvement, students' future opportunities, and local and national innovation.
- Computer science needs to be part of conversations about math-science-technology reform.
- Can make curriculum more relevant for students. Computer science courses can tap into students' interest in technology, helping them become technology innovators. Other teachers can build on these skills, allowing students to design technical solutions to problems in science, math, social studies, the arts, and literacy. This can make these courses more relevant for youth, potentially improving their engagement and achievement in these areas.
- Because a key component of computer science involves the use of critical thinking and problem solving, computer science courses and units can help schools better meet some existing state standards in these areas, as well as some math and science standards.
Luckily, there is a perfect candidate for the full-time position. The current student teacher for AP Computer Science A at Salinas High School is Ms. Trayford who graduated with her AA from Hartnell College and a BS from CSUMB in Computer Software Engineering. Mrs. Trayford is one of the most amazing and inspirational people I have ever met. Instead of taking her many skills into Silicon Valley, she has decided to take her talents back to her alma mater, Salinas High School, to teach high school students about Computer Science. She is giving back by showing students her love for CS and inspiring them to pursue jobs in these fields. She always has a smile on her face and is able to convey the sometimes enigmatic concepts to all of her students clearly. Please sign this petition to ensure that Salinas High Students will have equal opportunity and have access to Computer Science classes.
