This year we have faced more than our fair share in unprecedented difficulties ranging from COVID-19 to mental health issues to substantial social injustices. As if these challenges were not enough, virtual schooling has proven itself to be unwieldy and quite cumbersome. Although, everyone has tried, to the utmost of their ability, to survive this year. And this goes for teachers, staff, and faculty as much as it goes for students.

Finals are another burden to top it all off. After a year of distance learning, everyone is tired; tired of school, tired of work, tired of pushing themselves to limit at every moment of every day to maintain good grades. I know of so many students suffering and practically all of us can attest to a diminished sleep schedule.

Along with physical and mental problems, timing is another factor to take into consideration. Lots of SHS students can verify they have at least one AP class. As a matter of fact, some seniors have up to four or five. With CDC guidelines and certain restrictions on testing methods, AP testing has moved into the week we have finals. Imagine, you’re a senior, stressed with grades, college, and home life. Then, with everything is pilling up, your four AP classes are during finals week, meaning you now have 10 tests in one week, lasting one to three hours each.

Teachers and students alike have truly worked hard this year. If finals were waived, either overall or from an academic standpoint, there would be more time to focus on our AP testing and wind down from the stress. Everyone has truly persevered through this year and we all deserve a break.
