An estimated 50,000 incidents of sexual abuse or harassment take place in universities in England and Wales every year. Academics and University Managers believe around 15% of female students and 3% of male students are abused while at university.

66,045 people accessed Rape Crisis services in England and Wales in 2019-20.

90% of adult rape victims are female.

Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence.

Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence report it to the police.

Serious change is needed regarding the level of support provided by universities to students who have experienced sexual assault. Where support is available, it is often inadequate and rarely preventative. More needs to be done in terms of clearly directing survivors to the appropriate resources, as well as preemptively educating students on the topics of consent and sexual assault in order to prevent occurrences wherever possible; this is especially relevant with the new academic year fast approaching. A significant amount of students remain completely unaware of how to recognise the signs of sexual assault and rape, which leads to a huge increase in unreported crimes.

It is vital that we educate people as much as possible, and deliver a thorough explanation of how to understand and recognise consensual vs non-consensual activity. Another major concern is that new students socialising on unfamiliar grounds may not yet fully understand their personal limits with alcohol and other substances, or their comfort levels surrounding sexual activity. In response to this, I propose the following measures:

• Train more university counsellors to deal with sexual assault and rape survivors. This will reduce the waiting lists and give students a chance to receive emotional support within the University rather than externally.

• Increase security measures at freshers and student union events to ensure all students can get back and forth from events safely.

• Permanent visual presence around the university campus with information guiding you on who to contact and the resources available to victims.

• Prior to the new academic year in September, ensure all students receive thorough education about consent, in order to recognise situations where they haven't given full consent to others, as well as situations in which others haven't given consent to them. Reassure potential victims that their reports will be taken seriously and provide information on the support available.

With your help, we can really make a difference to end rape culture within universities. I said that I would be your voice, and so this is what I am doing. I refuse to tolerate the continuous cycle of sexual assault and rape culture any longer, and I hope you'll join me; this isn't some distant problem, this is happening to people around you right now.
