On Friday the 9th Feb Salford City Council announced a consultation on the closure of all five of its outstanding OFSTED rated nurseries - Little Hulton Day Nursery, Barton Moss Day Nursery, Higher Broughton Day Nursery, Belvedere Day Nursery and Winton Day Nursery.
106 nursery workers would lose their jobs, and over three hundred children would have to be placed elsewhere if the closures go ahead...
"If this happens it will have a devastating impact on dozens of mainly low-paid women workers as well as hundreds of children and families throughout our city" states Salford City UNISON, the trade union that represents the nursery workers.
A State of the Nation report by Government advisory body, the Social Mobility Commission in 2017 states "It is clear what drives positive development outcomes for disadvantaged children in the early years" the report notes "Strong promotion and take-up of the free childcare offer, high-quality preschool settings, effective training and advice for childcare workers, evidence-based support for parents on home learning, and integrated family services.
It seems counter-intuitive and very short sighted to close these places that are doing such an outstanding job.
