Why this petition matters

Started by Amelia Lawery

Hello everyone! My name is Amelia Lawery and I am the Vice President of the Salem Church Middle School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) here in the heart of Chesterfield County.

The objective of this petition is to get our Middle School children a safe way to cross Salem Church Road before and after school while traffic is flowing non stop through the crosswalk as it stands now.
My heart races every time I see a child run across the road with oncoming traffic, we have witnessed quite a few incidents of children almost being hit. During daylight savings time, it is still dark in the early morning hours as the children begin arriving, and visibility is limited; it can be hazardous for children going to school.

Salem Church Elementary School is directly next to Salem Middle School and they have an officer assigned to their location that directs traffic at their crosswalk, however their school hours are later, and they have a separate crosswalk entrance. Due to their ages, they are escorted by adults walking them to school.

The Middle school children are independently walking themselves to schools, the lack of a stop sign is dangerous, leaving them to run in front of two-way ongoing traffic. I cannot find one good reason to wait until it is at one of our children's expense to get something done about it.

We are respectfully requesting a crossing officer or a flashing (STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS) stop sign be put at the present crosswalk for Salem Church Middle School.
