Keep face masks mandatory in shops and on public transport

Wearing a mask in public indoor spaces is a minor inconvenience with a big impact, having been proven to reduce rates of infection considerably. It is unfair to ask shop workers, public transport workers, and others having to work in public indoor, crowded spaces to put themselves at risk.
At the same time, leaving mask wearing to “individual choice” puts us all, but especially older and clinically vulnerable people, at the mercy of those in our society least able or willing to behave responsibly. Just as we have speed limits and other rules of the road to protect us from irresponsible drivers, we need basic public health measures to protect us all from those who just do not care.
Even those who have had both jabs can still catch the Delta variant, older people and those with underlying conditions such as asthma or heart disease chiefly among them. Masks have been shown to reduce the R number by around 20%, a considerable result for a small inconvenience.
Please sign and share this petition to ask the government to keep masks and good ventilation mandatory in public indoor spaces.
