For some years Sainsbury's have been at the fore of championing the Fairtrade mark on many of its consumer goods and clothes. Now they are planning to end their long-standing support for the internationally recognised mark in favour of a self-governed scheme.

Fairtrade Foundation has built up a reputation with growers, producers and brand owners over 25 years, not to mention consumers. The mark is instantly recognisable and gives a clear message that the goods we buy meet an international standard of fairness and directly benefit communities of makers, growers and farmers around the world. No self-governed scheme, however well-intentioned, can hope to deliver the same consistency, recognition, and engender the same breadth of consumer confidence.

Call on Sainsbury's and other major retailers to stand by the Fairtrade mark. It's clear, it's consistent, it's trusted, it has our confidence as consumers.
