Increase Health Insurance Cover to Rs 5 Lacs Per Annum under SAIL Group Mediclaim

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has started a group mediclaim policy for its retired employees. The sum insurance cover for individual is only Rs 2 Lacs per annum. The subsidized premium is paid by the retired employees themselves.Most  retired senior citizen employees suffer from age related chronic disorder. Forced by the poor treatment facilities and non availability of trained doctors in Steel Authority of India (SAIL) 's own hospitals, these ex-employees prefer to get treated in private nursing homes and hospitals. However, the insurance coverage of Rs 2 Lacs per annum gets exhausted in preliminary treatment phase after which either they are forced to stop their treatment or borrow money from children or liquidate their fixed deposits. Most insurance companies deny to sell health insurance coverage to buyers post 60 years old. Some private insurers are ready to offer health insurance plans at exorbitant premium which are beyond the capacity of these retired SAIL employees. 


What Corrective Measures Need to be Taken Immediately?

1. SAIL  in collaboration with the insurance company needs to revise insurance coverage to Rs 5 Lacs per annum for individuals and Rs 6 Lacs per annum in case of spouse alive.

2. Different insurance coverage options should be available starting from Rs 7 Lacs per annum to Rs 15 Lacs per annum. Ex-employees on their financial capacity can choose the plan and buy the mediclaim coverage if they want more coverage beyond Rs 5 Lacs per annum

3. No physical mail, email or phone  communication is done for intimation of insurance renewal payment dates. Senior citizen employees get harassed for seeking information by running pillar to post. It must be done immediately.

4. Information booklet post purchase of group mediclaim coverage is not sent to residential address by the TPA.  It must be audited by SAIL on regular basis.

5. The contact person of TPA is always unreachable on the given mobile number or email.  These TPAs need to be changed immediately.

6. There must be separate insurance grievance cell  with dedicated officials in each of SAIL's administrative offices.
