On Wednesday, April 18, 2018 unidentified armed men stormed the Nigerian Senate and made away with the mace. Today, Friday, December 6, 2019, men of the DSS stormed a courtroom and ‘arrested’ Mr. Omoyele Sowore who only regained his freedom yesterday after spending several months in detention.

These two assaults on our democratic institutions transpired on the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari who swore an oath to defend the constitution of Nigeria.

President Buhari cannot wash his hands of these two events. It would be far-fetched for him to claim that the actions of the DSS do not have his imprimatur (or, at least, tacit approval).  But even if that were the case, it then means that we are being governed by an incompetent commander-in-chief who no longer commands.  If on the other hand, the President is behind the invasion of a court of law, then it means that he lacks the moral authority to continue leading our nation.

Nigeria belongs to all of us. We are a nation of mostly decent, proud people. We are not a nation of thugs and anarchists.  Therefore, the people of Nigeria cannot afford to play dead while the irresponsibility of our public servants tarnishes our country’s image and makes a mockery of our democracy.

A democratically elected President is not just an individual who represents a nation at foreign summits and signs the national budget. He should be a defender of the constitution, a champion of human rights and the moral conscience of a nation.

For a President to stand idly by and watch security forces desecrate hallowed democratic institutions is tantamount to gross negligence and abuse of office. It is also unconscionable for a President to give approval (whether explicit or tacit) for security agents (funded by the taxpayers) to hunt down his critics  - even in courtrooms!

Nigeria is a democracy. We do not have an Emperor. Power rests with the people of Nigeria. We, the people, are President Buhari’s principals. He is our agent. We offered him the power he wields, but in wielding it, we expect him to show responsibility, magnanimity, maturity, respect for human rights and regard our country’s democratic institutions.

Because the President has shown that he is incapable of governing by these democratic ideals, we have good reason to fear that Mr. Sowore’s fate may befall any of us someday -  if President Buhari’s dictatorial tendencies continue unabated. To avert this slide into the dark abyss of tyranny and to defend the democratic system our compatriots (like Chief M.KO Abiola, Mr. Ken Saro-Wiwa, Mr. Dele Giwa , Mrs. Kudirat Abiola  and many others) procured with their blood, we the people, hereby demand that the Federal House of Representatives begins an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the court invasion on Friday, December 6, 2019. Furthermore, the House should pass a resolution restraining security forces and the executive arm of government from meddling in Mr. Sowore’s prosecution.
