To improve road safety and traffic calming on New Park Road and Sultan Road.

Last week two school children were hit by traffic, one on the Ditherington road and one at the corner of New Park road. Both in areas identified in Shropshire Council’s Integrated Transport scheme as in need of improvement to enhance safety. But it was announced in April that both works would be deferred due to cuts in capital Transport budget until 2020/21.

Thankfully the two children involved in the accidents sustained only bruises and shock, so what needs to happen before children’s safety is put before balancing the books? The Martin Wilson School Head, David Purslow and Shrewsbury Cathedral Head Graeme Hawes, along with their Chairs of Governors Steve Wright and Gay Kendrick, and Councillor Alan Mosley have started a campaign aimed at persuading the council to re-evaluate it’s priorities and put the safety of children first.

The aim is to demand traffic calming on Sultan road and New Park Road and lower speed restrictions and traffic calming on New Park Road (outside the schools).

“Putting children first should not just be the work of schools but all members of the community and those that serve us in office. Safety for children is not only impacted by lack of good traffic management, but also cuts to frontline services such as the PCSO support.”

The schools are planning a number of events to highlight the concerns, including this online petition that everyone is invited to sign to help put children first.
