Sidewalk Snow Removal in Alton Village

The schools in the Alton Community, St. Anne Catholic School, Alton Village Public School and Frank Hayden Secondary School have been designed to be walking schools for our community children. In order to walk to school, our children require a safe route, free of copious amounts of snow and ice. Unfortunately, the City of Burlington is failing to take responsibility for many sidewalks in our community despite promising the residents of Burlington the following:
The City of Burlington is responsible for clearing snow from all sidewalks in the City. Sidewalks are classified as primary, secondary or residential, and are plowed in that order when snowfall accumulation exceeds 50 mm or 2".
Yet, as residents of the Alton Village Community, vast areas of sidewalk are left untouched after major snowfalls, making for a challenging and often dangerous walk for our children and the parents who accompany them. Numerous attempts to engage the City have been met with a stance that these sidewalks are unnassumed, even though many of them front parks that have been finished and in use for months if not years.
We would ask that the City of Burlington to revisit this issue and address the needs of the community by maintaining these sidewalks so that we can ensure a safe walk for all of our children to and from school during the winter months.
